Beat (2013) is a short documentary directed by Tim Dalgleish on Allen Ginsberg and his poem Howl which was published in 1956 and became one of the seminal works of the Beat Generation along with Kerouac's On The Road and Burroughs Naked Lunch. Contemporary interviewees read and discuss the enduring power and relevance of the poem which upon publication saw Lawrence Ferlinghetti and City Lights Books have to fight a trial on the grounds that the poem was obscene. In October 1957 Judge CW Horn ruled that the poem was not obscene and it is now a classic of the twentieth century with its famous opening lines...
'I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, Angel-headed hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night...' |

Krapp's Last Tape (2013) Directed by Tim Dalgleish was originally a one act play by Samuel Beckett written especially for Patrick Magee in 1958. In this one hour filmed version Tony Ffitch gives a deeply felt and absorbing performance following in the footsteps of actors as varied as Max Wall, Micheal Gambon, Corin Redgrave and John Hurt.
It is the occasion of Krapp's 69th birthday and he is listening to a tape of himself that he made thirty years previously and whilst listening with disgust, humour and anguish at who he was then he records a new tape. Krapp's Last Tape is a Manichaean canvas of the forces of light and dark which colour all lives. |
